Pakistan men’s cricket team head coach Mike Hesson has clarified that there has been no discussion regarding wicketkeeping with Babar Azam and that he is being considered strictly as an opening batter.
Hesson stated that if Babar is selected in the playing XI, he will open the innings alongside either Saim Ayub or Fakhar Zaman.
Speaking to the media, Hesson said that no player has been instructed to bat at a strike rate of 150, but fast-paced cricket is now essential in the modern game. He identified Pakistan’s batting as a key reason behind the team’s struggles in T20 cricket.
He further informed that a training camp focused on T20 preparations is underway, covering various aspects of the game, and will continue for a week.
Regarding team selection, Hesson said Hasan Ali will travel with the team to the West Indies and is currently in good form. In the absence of regular fast bowlers, new players have been tested, and more opportunities will be given to those who meet the demands of international cricket.
He reaffirmed full backing for Shaheen Shah Afridi, calling him a world-class bowler and emphasizing that the team wants to support his return to top form.
Hesson added that Haris Rauf is recovering from injury but remains with the squad, while Salman Mirza has been called up to replace Hasan Ali.
Explaining the selection process, Hesson stated that he is part of the selection committee.
The committee shortlists 20 players initially, after which the final squad of 15 is selected in consultation with the team captain and then submitted to the PCB chairman for final approval.
