KABUL: A US diplomat in Afghanistan has ruled out the possibility of another military intervention, and stressed the need for respecting human rights and norms of the international community.
The newly appointed Chargé d’Affaires of the US Mission to Afghanistan, Karen Decker told reporters that “No one should count on the US returning to Afghanistan militarily.” She said there was no chance for the US to engage in Afghanistan militarily, yet again.
Her statement came just three months after a US drone strike that killed the al-Qaeda leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri in Kabul. The strike took place in July followed by a number of drone sightings across Afghanistan.
Responding to questions by reporters, Decker said the US would instead every diplomatic and political attempt to hold the Taliban to its commitments. She said any US military intervention was highly unlikely and “No one should be counting on that outcome.”
“We must work [with the Taliban] through diplomacy, dialogue, development, and assistance to get to a place where Afghans can live the life they deserve,” she said, adding that her country would use diplomatic and political mechanisms to persuade the Taliban to respect human rights, human dignity, and the norms of the international community.
