KARACHI: Another case of the Omicron variant has been reported in the Sindh capital.
A woman, who came from the UK was infected with the virus, however, after the confirmation of Omicron, she managed to escape from the quarantine. It is to be noted that the Sindh Health Department has imposed lockdown in two areas of Karachi on confirmation of the first case of Omicron while public transport was also banned.
Areas affected by the micro-smart lockdown include Soldier Bazaar and the area around the Rahim apartments.
The Sindh Health Minister said in a video statement on December 9 that a genetic investigation into a suspected case of Omicron’s virus was underway in Karachi. Symptoms of the virus have been confirmed in a 57-year-old patient.
What is Omicron?
The world is currently facing a new variant of the coronavirus, which was first identified in South Africa and the province of Gauteng in South Africa became the center of this new variant but now it is spreading all over the world.
In a statement, the World Health Organization (WHO) designated the new coronavirus strain as a “variant of concern,” naming it “omicron” after a letter in the Greek alphabet.
Also called B.1.1.529, the variant has a very unusual constellation of mutations, which are worrying because they could help it evade the body’s immune response and make it more transmissible, scientists have said.
