Lahore: British-Pakistani boxer Amir Khan says the future of boxing in Pakistan is bright, and that one day the country will produce a champion like Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson.
At the International Boxing Championship held at the Jinnah Sports Complex in Lahore, British boxer James Metcalf won the WBA Asia Gold Middleweight Title.
James Metcalf knocked out the Dominican Republic’s Julio de Jesus in the third round.
Argentina’s boxer Alberto Palmeta claimed the WBA Asia South Welterweight Title by knocking out Filipino boxer Jopher Montano in the sixth round.
Speaking to the media on the occasion, former British boxer of Pakistani origin Amir Khan said he was pleased to be in Lahore. He noted that boxers from 15 countries took part in the event, and praised the fans and security arrangements as outstanding.
Amir Khan said this championship would help promote sports in Pakistan and that the hosting was excellent. He added that the event would also support tourism in the country.
The former world champion said Pakistan has highly talented boxers and the future of boxing in the country is promising.
He expressed confidence that Pakistan will one day produce a champion like Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson.
Amir Khan also said the matches held at the event were remarkable. He thanked the Pakistan Army for successfully organizing such a major event and appreciated the excellent security provided to all foreign
