VIRGINIA: Judge Penney Azcarate ruled on Friday that Amber Heard must pay Johnny Depp $10.35 million in damages after a Virginia jury found she unfairly portrayed him as an abuser.
The Fairfax County judge agreed with jurors that Heard must pay Depp $10.35 million, reduced from $15 million due to caps set by state law.
Judge Azacarate also stated that Heard must pay the entire $10.35 million of the judgment plus $480,000 (6% interest) if she were to file an appeal.
Depp sued Heard over a December 2018 article for The Washington Post, in which she described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse”.
The jury ruled in Depp’s favor on all three of his claims relating to specific statements in the piece and found he should receive $10m (£8.14m) in compensatory damages.
During the sensational televised trial, the couple revealed lurid details of their short marriage, which made headlines across the world.
Heard has said she plans to appeal against the verdict.
The case will be moved to the Court of Appeals of Virginia after 21 days and both parties will have 30 days to file an appeal notice.
