Helena Bonham Carter has said Amber Heard jumped on the #MeToo bandwagon and Johnny Depp is completely vindicated after the trial.
After a court case which dominated the summer, Johnny Depp has been cleared of domestic abuse and he has been able to continue his acting career.
Speaking to The Times in a new interview, Carter, who has appeared alongside Depp, 59, in seven films together, claimed, “Oh, I think he’s completely vindicated.”
“You can’t ban people. I hate cancel culture. It has become quite hysterical and there’s a kind of witch-hunt and a lack of understanding,” she said.
Despite the dispute with Amber Heard, Depp has retained the support of a number of his Hollywood contemporaries, including Helena Bonham Carter.
Once of Harry Potter fame, Bonham Carter believes that Heard jumped on the #MeToo bandwagon and attempted to exploit it for her own gain.
“I think he’s fine now, totally fine.” She said.
“My view is that Amber got on that pendulum, that’s the problem with these things, that people will jump on the bandwagon because it’s the trend and to be the poster girl for it.”
In the same interview, Bonham Carter was quizzed on cancellation culture and the best ways for celebrities to recover from scandals.
Although Depp was ultimately found not guilty, he was unable to work for a considerable amount of time and lost important roles in the Pirates of the Caribbean series and in commercials for cologne.
In the same interview, Bonham Carter was asked about cancel culture and the state of how a celebrity can rehabilitate themselves after a scandal.
