AI Grok under fire after generating explicit images of women, children

A growing number of women and girls have reportedly been digitally “undressed” by X’s AI chatbot Grok, according to a recent report by The Washington Post. Users have been prompting the bot to generate images of subjects in lingerie, bikinis, covered in liquid, or with fearful expressions, and some of the outputs appear to depict children. The issue surfaced online last week when users noticed Grok producing AI-generated images of women with exposed bodies. Screenshots reviewed by The Post show explicit prompts, including instructions to remove clothing, manipulate poses, and generate sexualized depictions. “It is insane that X is allowing these types of generations to happen with no consent of the people, incredibly gross behavior,” one user wrote in a post that gained significant attention. Despite mounting criticism from high-profile victims and advocacy groups, X has not imposed restrictions on Grok’s ability to produce explicit content. Meanwhile, Elon Musk highlighted the app’s rising app store rankings and shared generated images of young women in revealing outfits. According to app analytics firm Apptopia, daily downloads of Grok surged by 54 percent between Friday and Monday. The latest controversy has amplified calls from women’s advocates, watchdog groups, and foreign governments, who argue that the social media company is mishandling AI safety, especially compared with stricter content moderation policies at other firms. Experts and commentators are questioning whether the problem lies primarily with the technology itself or the people using it. “AI can reflect biases and unsafe behavior, but human intent drives many of these explicit prompts,” said one observer. Discussions are ongoing about whether more robust AI guardrails or stronger accountability for users is the solution.
