ISALAABAD: Mahmood Khan Achakzai has penned a letter to ECP seeking postponement of presidential elections until Electoral College is completed.
The upcoming presidential election, scheduled for March 9, will witness Achakzai competing against the ruling coalition’s joint candidate, Asif Ali Zardari. Achakzai addressed a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Sikandar Sultan Raja, emphasizing the necessity of completing the Electoral College for fair play and justice.
In the letter, Achakzai mentioned that the SIC had filed a petition in court regarding reserved seats, resulting in an injunctive order. He expressed optimism about receiving a favorable verdict. Achakzai argued that conducting or scheduling elections without completing the Electoral College would be deemed illegal and against the constitution.
Considering these circumstances, Achakzai proposed postponing or delaying the presidential election until the Electoral College is completed, emphasizing the importance of justice, fair play, and equity.
Achakzai’s correspondence came a day before the election was set to take place across the five assemblies. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had previously appointed five presiding officers to oversee the election in Islamabad and the four provincial capitals.
The president is elected by an electoral college comprising members from the Senate, the National Assembly, and the four provincial assemblies, with voting conducted through a secret ballot.
