COVID-19: Pakistan records another 1,052 cases, 44 deaths

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan recorded more than one thousand cases from coronavirus, while another 44 people succumbed to COVID-19 in the last 24 hours.

According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), Pakistan reported 1,052 cases and 44 deaths in the previous 24-hour period. The national tally of coronavirus cases has reached 952,907 while the death toll stands at 21,152.

There were 45,924 tests conducted in the past day, while the positivity ratio has remained at 2.29%. The number of active cases in the country has also reduced to 32,921 while there are 2,029 people in critical condition. Overall 897,834 people have recovered from the virus, including 1,013 in the past day.

Punjab has recorded 345,546 cases and 10,700 deaths, while the number of active cases in the province has reduced to 9,062. Islamabad has recorded 82,502 cases and 775 deaths while there are 1,029 active cases in the federal capital.

Sindh has recorded 334,453 cases and 5,392 deaths while the number of active cases in the province has dropped to 19,565. The number of coronavirus cases in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa stands at 137,484 and 4,294 deaths while Balochistan has recorded 26,893 cases and 304 deaths.

Joint global efforts 

Pakistan has stressed the need for a joint global strategy to fight the pandemic and called for an uninterrupted supply of vaccines for early eradication of the deadly coronavirus.

The NCOC organised a briefing session for members of the diplomatic corps and international organisations to highlight the successful efforts of the government against COVID-19.

National Coordinator NCOC Lt Gen Hamood Uz Zaman, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan and Foreign Secretary Sohail Mahmood were also present on the occasion.

According to the statement, NCOC chief and Federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar outlined multiple dimensions of Pakistan’s national response.

​The participants were given a detailed briefing, showcasing Pakistan’s response to COVID-19 which also highlighted various strands of the country’s strategy to tackle the pandemic. They were also briefed on various aspects of the “smart” and “micro smart” lockdown strategy as well as its success in containing the spread of the disease.

Asad Umar stressed the need for a joint global strategy and response to fight the pandemic and called for an uninterrupted and even supply of vaccines globally for the early eradication of the pandemic. The participants thanked for the comprehensive briefing and appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to mitigate the adverse effects of the disease in the country.
