FAISALABAD: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Tuesday handed over the four accused policemen on eight-day physical remand in Waqas murder case.

The court heard the case related to the murder of a citizen Waqas who was killed after firing of police officials. The court ordered to produce the suspects on February 3 and adjourned hearing.

During the hearing, the plaintiff’s lawyer told the court that the remand was required for questioning the suspects. He said the police have not yet seized the murder weapon from the suspects. He said that the court granted physical remand of the policemen for further investigation and the recovery of the weapon.

At least one person identified as Sardar Waqas was killed and three others sustained injuries after police opened fire on a vehicle in Faisalabad on January 20, claiming that it did not stop at a checkpoint when instructed.

Police had claimed that a patrolling team had indicated a vehicle to stop during snap checking but the driver attempted to speed away from the policeman. The police had claimed that Waqas and others had consumed alcohol.

Police had arrested four cops including an assistant sub-inspector and three constables into custody in the Waqas murder case. Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar had taken notice of the incident and ordered an enquiry into the incident.

Faisalabad police department had also constituted a five-member inquiry committee to hold an investigation into the incident.
