KARACHI: The Karachi Municipal Corporation (KMC) has started a grand operation to remove encroachments from the stormwater drain in Mehmoodabad.
A large of KMC teams have arrived on the location along with a heavy contingent of police and Rangers who have cordoned off the area to avoid any untoward incident. Police have been deployed outside every street in the locality and residents have been instructed to stay indoors.
All arrangements have been completed for the operation while several shanty huts along the drain’s embankments have been demolished. Heavy machinery has been brought in to raze concrete structure in the presence of police.
Sources informed that Sindh Assembly MPA Saeed Ghani had given the directives to widen the stormwater drain by demolishing 20 houses. However, only one encroached road is being demolished at the moment.
Area residents have shown any resistance over the operation and the KMC staff are prepared for the operation to reach its logical conclusion. Police are present in case of any protests and Rangers can also be called if the situation worsens.
