KARACHI: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) will hold a public hearing regarding the load shedding crisis in Karachi on 10th July via video conference due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The regulator stated that extreme load-shedding has been causing a lot of difficulties for citizens in Karachi especially in the area of Surjani Town, Gadap, Gharo, Kathor. On the other hand, the CEO of K-Electric recently claimed that the company is not carrying out load-shedding in any area of Karachi.
In recent weeks, citizens living in the city complained about unreasonable billing and unannounced power outages that have added to the misery of soaring temperatures and the coronavirus outbreak.

Last month, many residents took to the streets to protest the power outages, blocking main roads and highways to bring the issue to the attention of the relevant authorities.
“There is no load-shedding being carried out anywhere in Karachi,” KE’s CEO Moonis Alvi said. He said that at least 1,800 feeders supply electricity to Karachi and it passes through over 28,500 transformers to reach people’s homes.
Moonis Alvi said that the power outages in the city could also be a result of a technical fault in electricity feeders and the company’s staff work 24 hours a day to fix the problems. “Every power outage is not load-shedding,” he said.
The company is carrying out maintenance work in the city because it was interrupted due to the coronavirus lockdown in the city, he added. “The clarification of the KE CEO comes hours after Sindh’s Governor Imran Ismail expressed his displeasure over the company’s failure to end power outages in the city,” he further added.
