Coronavirus: Several Indian leaders hesitate to end lockdown

NEW DELHI (REUTERS): India’s 21-day lockdown is set to end next week but several Indian political leaders hesitated to end the world’s biggest lockdown.
According to details, several Indian political leaders have called for an extension or only a partial lifting of restrictions and said that it was the only way to halt the spread of coronavirus.
India has so far escaped a big surge in cases after Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked its 1.3 billion people to stay indoors. However, shutting down the $2.9 trillion economy has left millions of people without work.
The Chief Minister of the southern state of Telangana said, “I am for the lockdown of the country furthermore after April 15, because, we can recover from the economic problem, but we cannot get back lives.”
The leaders of the eastern states of Assam and Chhattisgarh have also supported the idea of extending the lockdown or partial lifting of restrictions while they dealt with the infections.
So far, coronavirus has claimed lives of almost 115 people across India and has affected more than 4,000 infections.
