PESHAWAR: Three-day anti-polio drive has begun in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa today.
About 6 million children under the age of five years would be administered the anti-polio drops in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the three-day campaign.
According to Minister for Health Taimur Saleem Jhagra, the KP government is aiming to eradicate the polio disease from the province. The security arrangements have been stricken in this regard.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Health Department officials told that the anti-polio drive starts in the province will be launched in Peshawar, Bajaur. Charsadda, Mardan, Nowshera, Buner, Torghar, Malakand, Swat, Kohat, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Mohmand, Khyber, and Swabi district.
Pakistan is among the three countries in the world, including Afghanistan and Nigeria, where poliovirus still exists.
Pakistan remains under a polio-linked travel restriction imposed on the recommendation of the World Health Organisation due to which every person traveling abroad has to carry a polio vaccination certificate.
Polio is a highly infectious disease caused by poliovirus mainly affecting children under the age of five. It invades the nervous system and can cause paralysis or even death. While there is no cure for polio, vaccination is the most effective way to protect children from this crippling disease.
