KARACHI: Another incident has exposed concerns over Karachi’s deteriorating roads and poor maintenance of basic civic infrastructure after a sewage manhole cover near NIPA Chowrangi gave way under the weight of a water tanker, causing the heavy vehicle to overturn.
The incident, captured on CCTV footage, has raised fresh questions about the performance of the city administration, particularly Mayor Karachi, and the authorities responsible for maintaining roads and drainage infrastructure.
The accident has once again highlighted concerns over who is responsible for ensuring the safety of Karachi’s roads and what practical measures are being taken to protect commuters from such hazards.
The viral footage shows the water tanker emerging from a street and approaching the main road. As its front wheel moved over a sewage manhole cover, the heavy load caused the cover to shift from its position. When the rear wheel reached the same spot, the tanker lost its balance and overturned onto the road.
A large quantity of water spilled from the tanker, flooding part of the road, while the driver sustained minor injuries.
The incident is more than just another road accident; it has raised serious concerns about the maintenance of civic infrastructure and the monitoring mechanisms of the relevant authorities.
If a sewage manhole cover cannot withstand the weight of a heavy vehicle, questions naturally arise about the safety of ordinary commuters, pedestrians and motorcyclists using the city’s roads.
Residents are questioning when promises to improve Karachi’s infrastructure and make its roads safer will translate into tangible action. They are also demanding that Mayor Karachi and the relevant civic authorities explain what steps are being taken to inspect, repair and maintain sewage manhole covers across the city.
Repeated incidents of this nature raise serious concerns about public safety and the effectiveness of the city’s civic management system. Ensuring the safety of residents requires practical measures rather than promises alone.
