PIMS nursery fire probe enters crucial stage as scope widens

ISLAMABAD: Significant progress has been reported in the investigation into the Mother and Child Health (MCH) nursery fire tragedy at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), where 14 newborns officially lost their lives.

MM News has learnt that a high‑level committee formed on the instructions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expanded the scope of its inquiry into PIMS nursery fire, examining possible negligence and lapses in safety protocols.

Scope of PIMS Nursery Fire Inquiry Widens

According to sources, the committee is reviewing CCTV footage, duty rosters and staff statements to determine the causes of the PIMS nursery fire.

Written statements have already been submitted by the Joint Executive Director of PIMS, the Joint Director of Children’s Hospital, the Joint Executive Director of Non‑Medical and the Deputy Executive Director.

Health management officials and nursery staff are also being questioned. The duty roster of August 26, along with reports from the fire brigade and emergency department, has been handed over to investigators.

Hospital Administration Forms New Committee

In parallel, the PIMS administration has reconstituted its own inquiry committee to dig into facts related to PIMS nursery fire, appointing Professor Dr. Atif Inam Shami as chairman, with Professor Dr. Altaf Hussain and Professor Dr. Sajid Rafique Abbasi as members, while Deputy Executive Director Dr. Aneza Jalil will serve as secretary.

This committee will assess whether fire safety arrangements were adequate and functional, and will conduct a detailed review of rescue and firefighting operations. Both committees have been directed to submit reports within 48 hours.

Earlier Safety Warnings Ignored

The PIMS nursery fire probe comes amid criticism that earlier warnings were ignored.

A Capital Development Authority (CDA) report issued in December had flagged outdated firefighting equipment, a faulty alarm system and inadequate safety measures at PIMS, warning of the risk of a major tragedy.

Secretary to the Ministry of Health Captain (retd) Muhammad Mahmood said resolving PIMS’ administrative problems is his top priority, adding that he will personally sit at the hospital to hear complaints from patients and citizens.
