RAWALPINDI: Heavy monsoon rain continued to lash the twin cities on Tuesday, pushing the water level in Nala Lai to the pre-alert mark and prompting the Rawalpindi Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) to launch dewatering operations in several low-lying areas.
According to the Flood Control Room, the water level at Katarian reached 10 feet, while it stood at 7 feet at Gowalmandi following the latest spell of rain.
Heavy downpour inundates low-lying areas
The latest rainfall data showed 115 millimetres of rain recorded at Shamsabad, 72mm at Pirodhai, 59mm at Gowalmandi, 47mm at New Katarian and 26mm at Kachhari.
Rainfall gauging stations in Islamabad recorded 59mm at Bokra, 47mm at the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) station, 22mm at Golra and 3mm at Saidpur.
The heavy downpour caused rainwater to accumulate in several low-lying parts of Rawalpindi, including along Murree Road, disrupting normal movement and prompting authorities to intensify drainage operations.
WASA teams have been deployed to affected locations with machinery to drain accumulated rainwater, while officials are monitoring Nala Lai and other drainage channels as rainfall continues.
The latest situation comes amid an active monsoon spell that has already caused urban flooding and disrupted routine life in parts of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
Authorities have previously warned that intense rainfall could cause rapid rises in water levels in Nala Lai and other stormwater drains.
Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel through waterlogged roads and follow instructions issued by the district administration and emergency agencies.
