Karachi: A fruit vendor who rescued a child from a water-filled pit in Karachi’s Manzoor Colony has been widely praised for his bravery, with Jamaat-e-Islami announcing a reward in recognition of his selfless act.
The incident gained widespread attention after CCTV footage went viral on social media. The video shows a young boy riding a bicycle before attempting to avoid a motorcycle, losing control and falling into a deep, water-filled excavation.
Shahid, a fruit vendor working nearby, immediately rushed to the scene and climbed into the pit without hesitation, rescuing the child safely despite risking his own safety.
In recognition of his courage, Jamaat-e-Islami councillors Hammad Butt and Abdullah Khan announced that Shahid would be presented with a new mobile phone after his own device was damaged when it fell into the water during the rescue.
Speaking after the incident, Shahid urged the government to repair damaged roads and ensure proper safety measures at excavation sites to prevent similar accidents in the future.
According to police, the incident occurred on Wednesday night outside a Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation pumping station in Manzoor Colony, where an excavated pit had become hazardous after filling with rainwater.
After ensuring the child’s safety, Shahid quietly returned to his fruit cart and resumed work. Social media users hailed him as a “true hero,” applauding his courage, humility and quick response.
