US second lady Usha Vance, who has never sought out the limelight, is in the news as her husband U.S. Vice President JD Vance is currently leading the high-level talks with Iranian officials to end the war.
Usha Vance is a sort of embodiment of the American dream. A child of Indian immigrants, she went to Cambridge, Yale, clerked for Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, and now is the second lady of the US, and may become the first lady should her husband become the president of the country.
Born and raised in the working-class suburbs of San Diego, California, to a mechanical engineer father and a molecular biologist mother who had moved to the US from Andhra Pradesh, India, she earned her bachelor’s degree from Yale University, a Master of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge, and a J.D. from Yale Law School.
She served as a law clerk for Chief Justice John Roberts and then-Judge Brett Kavanaugh before working as a trial lawyer at the Munger, Tolles & Olson law firm. She left her law practice after her husband was selected to run for Vice President.
She met JD Vance while they were both studying at Yale Law School. The couple married in 2014 in an interfaith ceremony. They have three children, sons Ewan and Vivek, and daughter Mirabel.
