DUBAI: Flight operations at Dubai International Airport were briefly halted and several flights diverted on Monday following a suspected drone attack that ignited a fire at a fuel storage facility near the terminal. Authorities immediately suspended services as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of passengers and staff, with officials directing a number of incoming flights to the nearby Al-Maktoum International Airport.

Authorities are currently responding to a fire resulting from a drone-related incident in the vicinity of Dubai International Airport. All necessary measures are being taken to ensure everyone’s safety.

In a statement issued by the government’s media office, travellers were urged to contact their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules, with officials promising further clarity as the situation evolved.

The gravity of the incident was underscored by footage circulating on social media, which showed towering flames and thick plumes of smoke rising from the vicinity of the airport.

The strike marks a sharp escalation in regional tensions, following explicit warnings from Tehran calling for the evacuation of three major ports in the United Arab Emirates. Middle East observers believe this development represents a shift in rhetoric, as it is the first time Iran has directly threatened a neighbouring country’s non-US assets.

The warnings from Iran, it may be added here, are rooted in accusations that the United States has been utilizing Emirati docks and ports as staging grounds for strikes against Kharg Island, the primary terminal for Iranian oil exports. While Tehran has provided no concrete evidence to support these claims, the allegations come amid a broader conflict that shows few signs of de-escalating.
