Legal battle erupts: Who will inherit Sunjay Kapur’s Rs 30,000 crore assets?

A fierce legal battle has erupted over the Rs 30,000 crore estate of late  Indian industrialist Sunjay Kapur, following his sudden death during a polo match in London on June 12, 2025.

The dispute has now spilled into the Delhi High Court, with multiple family members accusing Kapur’s widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur, of forging his will and wrongfully claiming control of his personal assets and the RK Family Trust.

The suit, filed by Kapur’s children from his previous marriage to Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor – Samaira (20) and Kiaan (15) – alleges that Priya Kapur presented a suspicious, unregistered will seven weeks after Sunjay’s death. According to them, the will, dated March 21, 2025, unfairly excludes them and grants Priya full control of his assets.

Their lawyer, senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, told the court that the will was never disclosed earlier, was introduced under suspicious circumstances, and was read informally at a hotel. The executor, he claimed, only learned of the will a day before its presentation.

The Kapur children claim the will was forged and that their rights as legal heirs are being violated. Their mother, Karisma Kapoor, is representing them in court. “The children had a close relationship with their father. The will’s sudden appearance, weeks after his passing, and its exclusion of them raises serious concerns,” Jethmalani argued.

Adding to the turmoil is Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, who says she has been left with “nothing” and claims she was disinherited without her knowledge. “I am 80 years old. Today, I have no roof over my head. I sent over 15 emails asking about the will and got no response,” she told the court, through her lawyer.

Rani Kapur alleges that the RK Family Trust – named after her – and assets worth over Rs 10,000 crore were handed to Priya within months of marriage, leaving her with nothing.

Priya Sachdev Kapur, who is now on the board of Sona Comstar (the family business Sunjay inherited), has denied all allegations. Her lawyer, senior advocate Rajiv Nayar, argued that the children are already beneficiaries of the trust and recently received Rs 1,900 crore. “What more do they want?” he asked the court.

However, sources close to the family argue that while the children may be named beneficiaries, they currently have no access or control over the funds – all of which remain under Priya’s supervision.

The Delhi High Court has now intervened. On Wednesday, it directed Priya Kapur to submit a complete list of all movable and immovable assets held by Sunjay Kapur as of June 12, 2025 – the day he died.

“For now, we’re registering the plaint. Priya Kapur must file replies and declare all assets as of June 12,” the court said. The next hearing is scheduled for October 9.

Summons have been issued, and written replies are due in two weeks. The court will also consider a request for an interim injunction to prevent any asset transfer until the matter is resolved.

Sunjay Kapur’s sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith, has also backed Karisma’s children. Speaking to the press, she said, “The wealth was meant to be distributed equally. One person has taken everything. My mother doesn’t even have a roof over her head.”

Smith welcomed the court’s asset disclosure order and questioned the authenticity of the will. “It just doesn’t make sense that the children, who had a genuine bond with their father, were left out.”

She also called for transparency: “We need answers. Until there’s an honest sit-down with full disclosure, nothing will be resolved.”

According to the preliminary report, the incident was not caused by an air-conditioner compressor explosion or an electrical short circuit. Instead, the fire reportedly broke out after a nebulizer attached to an incubator, used to monitor oxygen levels, exploded.
