In this digital age, internet love stories have become increasingly common as modern communication tools shrink the world into a village. However, things are not always end well. One such case recently surfaced when an American woman came all the way from US only to find heartache in Karachi when the young man, who promised to marry her over the internet, ditched her.
Who is Onijah Andrew Robinson?
Thirty-three-year-old Onijah Andrew Robinson met Nidal Ahmed Memon, 19, online. Seems like they hit it off because she up and left her two kids in the States to fly over to Karachi. She landed in the port city on October 11 hoping that her sweetheart would be waiting for her.
But the plot takes a twist Nidal, who lives in Karachi’s Garden district, got cold feet or something because of his family’s pressure, and he bailed on marrying her. That left Robinson in a real jam stuck at Jinnah International Airport for a whole week and nowhere else to go.
Her tourist visa was no good anymore so bouncing out of Pakistan wasn’t an option. She tried to track down Nidal at his Garden pad, but no luck. The guy’s family had pulled a Houdini and left the place all locked up.
The News reports citing police sources, that Nidal was taken into custody by intelligence agencies four days ago, while his family had already vacated their home.
With no place to go, Robinson staged a sit-in outside Nidal’s house, refusing to leave.
What is Onijah doing now?
Officials from the U.S. Consulate say their objective was to convince Robinson to return home. However, they clarified that they could not force her to leave if she chose to stay.
Robinson said she would return to the U.S. whenever she wished, but no welfare organization has offered her shelter.
Robinson sticking to her decision to stay in Pakistan, throws out an odd request. She’s asking for a weekly $3,000 and she’s dead set on snagging Pakistani citizenship.
When she talked about what she wants to do, this is what she said:
“You got to give me $3,000 a week. I’m becoming a citizen of Pakistan, that’s all I got to say for tonight.”
