The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has appointed renowned Pakistani actress Saba Qamar as its first National Ambassador for child rights in Pakistan.

The announcement coincided with the International Day of the Girl Child, a day dedicated to promoting girls’ rights and addressing the unique challenges they face globally.

UNICEF Representative in Pakistan, Mr. Abdullah Fadil, welcomed Qamar to the role, lauding her as a powerful and courageous advocate for the rights of women and girls.

“It’s an honor to join UNICEF. I will carry our shared mission of realizing every child’s rights wherever I go,” Qamar expressed in a press release. “In my recent travels, I have witnessed the challenges children and women face in Pakistan, as well as the impact of UNICEF’s dedicated efforts. I am committed to doing my part for the children and young people of Pakistan, so they, too, can dream and pursue their aspirations,” she added.

As UNICEF Pakistan’s National Ambassador, the Kamli and Hindi Medium star will leverage her influence to highlight issues impacting young people, including child marriage, mental health, education gaps, gender equality, climate change, and the effects of violence, exploitation, and child poverty.

Child marriage remains one of the most significant obstacles to girls realizing their rights in Pakistan, which has 19 million child brides, the sixth-highest number globally.
