KARACHI: A tragic unfolded on Sunday when two children and a young man lost their lives after becoming trapped in a 100-foot-deep well at a residential building near Fawara Chowk in Garden area of Karachi.
According to Karachi police officials, the children, aged 8 and 12, were playing on the well’s lid when it suddenly gave way under their weight, causing them to fall to the bottom, where a submersible water pump was installed. In a desperate attempt to save them, residents called a local plumber, but he too met a tragic end when the rope he was using snapped, causing him to fall into the well.
Rescue teams arrived quickly, but their efforts were hampered by the presence of toxic gases inside the well, leading to a five-hour operation. Despite being pulled out in critical condition, the two children, identified as Badar and Talha, and the plumber were later pronounced dead.
Authorities reported that one of the rescue workers also became trapped in the well but was eventually rescued safely. The police surgeon stated that the exact cause of death for the victims would be determined through a post-mortem examination.
The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South disclosed that Sunny Builders had dug the 100-foot-deep well as part of their housing project and directed the Garden police to initiate criminal proceedings against the owners and builders of the residential building.
