ECP to hear petitions against PTI’s intra-party elections today

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is set to begin hearings today on a series of petitions challenging the legitimacy of the recent intra-party elections of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Eleven petitioners, including prominent figures such as Akbar S. Babar, Tahir Nawaz, and Noreen Farooq, have raised concerns over the transparency and fairness of the intra-party elections. The petitions collectively call for the annulment of the election results.

The controversy stems from the Election Commission’s directive to PTI to conduct intra-party elections, which were held on December 3. In these elections, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan emerged as the Chairman of PTI, winning the position unopposed. Umar Ayub secured the role of General Secretary, while Yasmin Rashid and Ali Amin Gandapur were elected as the Presidents of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, respectively.

Akbar S. Babar, a founding member of PTI, has publicly voiced suspicions regarding the entire intra-party election process. In his petition filed with the Election Commission, Babar has raised concerns about irregularities and has called for a thorough investigation into the matter.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, former PTI Chairman Imran Khan has challenged the Election Commission’s decision to order a fresh round of intra-party elections. Imran Khan filed a petition yesterday in the Lahore High Court (LHC), contesting the need for a re-election and seeking clarity on the legal basis for such a directive.

The hearings at the Election Commission are expected to shed light on the intricacies of the intra-party election process and determine whether there were any violations of electoral regulations.
