Lieutenant General Asif Ghafoor retired today, concluding a distinguished 40-year career in the Pakistan Army. Before retiring, he held the position of President of the National Defence University (NDU). Ghafoor’s notable past roles include serving as the Corps Commander of Quetta and as the 20th Director General of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) from 2016 to 2020.
Known for his strategic acumen, dynamic leadership, and unwavering dedication, Lt. Gen. Ghafoor made lasting contributions to both the Pakistan Army and the nation. Commissioned into the Pakistan Army on September 9, 1988, from the Pakistan Military Academy Kakul, his career is a testament to his commitment to duty. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, holding critical positions such as the Director General of ISPR, Commander of XII Corps in Quetta, and President of NDU, Islamabad.
During his tenure as DG ISPR (2016-2020), Lt. Gen. Ghafoor became the face of Pakistan’s military narrative, playing a pivotal role in countering misinformation and boosting public confidence during challenging periods, including Operation Radd-ul-Fasaad and the 2019 India-Pakistan tensions. His leadership in key anti-terrorism operations, such as Operation Sherdil and Operation Zarb-e-Azb, showcased his exceptional tactical skills in the face of adversity.
Lt. Gen. Ghafoor also made significant contributions to modernizing the Army’s communication systems as Inspector General of Communication & Information Technology, underscoring his technical expertise and forward-thinking vision.
As President of NDU, a role he held from November 2023 until his retirement, Lt. Gen. Ghafoor focused on shaping future leaders through strategic studies and defense education. His leadership in this domain was widely praised for its emphasis on fostering knowledge and promoting professional excellence.
At a farewell ceremony held at NDU, senior military officials commended Lt. Gen. Ghafoor’s outstanding service, highlighting his professionalism, integrity, and ability to inspire generations of soldiers. General Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff, praised him as a “symbol of commitment and excellence” whose legacy would continue to guide the Pakistan Army.
Expressing his gratitude, Lt. Gen. Ghafoor said, “It has been an honor to serve my country and the Pakistan Army. I leave with pride and confidence in the bright future of this great institution.”
As he steps into retirement, Lt. Gen. Ghafoor plans to dedicate time to his family, pursue scholarly interests, and share his vast experience through writing and mentorship. His 40 years of service will remain an enduring source of inspiration for both the armed forces and the people of Pakistan.
