Some students associated with Islamabad have achieved the honor of participating in NASA’s Space Camp in the United States due to their deep interest in science and their efforts to gain the attention of authorities.
With financial assistance from the American Consulate General in Karachi, successful students from science competitions were given the opportunity to participate in NASA’s Space Camp. 24 students were selected from three schools in Karachi, and they took part in the Space Camp organized by the American Space and Rocket Center.
The event was organized through mutual cooperation between the American Consulate General in Karachi and the Dawood Foundation, with the aim of promoting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in 50 schools in Karachi. This Space Camp is located in Huntsville, Alabama, USA.
During this scientific competition, students from the Iqra Green Secondary School in the Hijrat Colony area of Karachi secured the first position. They have developed an “anti-sleep” device, which prevents drivers from falling asleep while driving.
It is evident that drowsiness during driving is not only a significant danger in Pakistan but also a global concern for drivers and road users. According to the World Health Organization, fatigue is a crucial factor in accidents worldwide. Drowsy drivers have to deal with the risk of impaired decision-making, drowsiness, and getting distracted from their lanes.
To address this issue, creating awareness about the risks of drowsy driving, recognizing signs of fatigue, prioritizing sufficient rest, and promoting alternative transportation options are essential.
The purpose of this student innovation is to reduce accidents and enhance road safety. One student stated in an interview with MM News that when you wear these glasses during driving, it activates the device. If you close your eyes for more than 1 minute, the glasses emit sounds that instantly wake you up from sleep.
The students took about four months to prepare these anti-sleep glasses.
Regarding their participation in NASA’s Space Camp, the students mentioned that they have received a wealth of information about technology from the camp. They expressed their desire for the Pakistani government to support them so that they can further shine the name of Pakistan.
