MANCHAR: India has decided to continue placing a ban on onion exports until February 2020 as the country’s domestic prices have risen due to the rain.
The export of onions was banned in September to keep domestic supply inside India as prices surged after rain and floods during October and November limited onion supply.

Countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka were India’s largest importers are finding difficulties to fulfil their demand.
A senior government official at the Indian Department of Consumer Affairs said, “We will think about resuming exports once prices come down. Right now it is not possible.”

From January onwards supplies are expected to rise meaningfully once prices come down to a comfortable level.
Since the onions banned by India, onion prices have spiraled in Asia and forcing leading buyers such as Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to source the crop from Myanmar, Egypt, Turkey, and China.

Earlier on Saturday, Bangladesh imported onions from Iran as the price of the vegetable soared to record highs.
