KARACHI: Today marks the 56th birth anniversary of first-ever female pop sensation Nazia Hassan.
Born in Karachi on 3rd April 1965, Nazia Hassan made her singing debut with the song ‘Aap Jaisa Koi’ for the Bollywood movie ‘Qurbani’ in 1980.
She became the first Pakistani to win the Filmfare Award at the age of 15 and remains the youngest recipient of the award to date. She was also a recipient of Pakistan’s highest civilian award Pride of Performance.

The pop sensation from Pakistan and Asia was also the first Pakistani singer to find herself on the British Charts when she sang the English version of her famous song Disco Deewane titled “Dreamer Deewane.”
She became a cultural ambassador in 1991 at UNICEF. Her last album, Camera Camera (1992), was part of a campaign against drugs. Nazia Hassan also served the public through her philanthropic activities. In 1999, she suffered from cancer and died on 13th August 2000 in London at the young age of 35.
