At least 38 livestock animals have died after consuming toxic feed (bran pieces) in Karachi’s Landhi area, triggering concern among dairy farmers and calls for stricter regulation of animal feed.
The incident occurred at Babar Market Cattle Colony, where several cows and buffaloes either died immediately or had to be slaughtered in an emergency after showing severe symptoms of poisoning.
According to Shakir Umar Gujjar, President of the Dairy and Cattle Farmers Association Pakistan, the incident occurred at the farm of a dairy farmer named Mubashir. Eighteen buffaloes and cows died immediately, while 20 animals had to be slaughtered on an emergency basis. Another 22 animals are currently battling for their lives.
The association’s president said that the Sindh Livestock Department and the KMC Veterinary Department are responsible for the incident, as no representative from either department has yet visited the farm.
He urged the Sindh government to introduce a licensing system for feed mills similar to that in Punjab, make toxin testing mandatory, and immediately compensate the affected farmer for losses worth millions of rupees.
