ANKARA: Two police officers were injured on Sunday after an explosion near Turkey’s parliament in Ankara.
Turkey’s interior minister that two “terrorists” carried out a bomb attack in front of the ministry buildings in Ankara, adding one of them died in the explosion and the other was “neutralized” by authorities.
Turkish media earlier reported that an explosion was heard near the parliament and ministerial buildings in the heart of Ankara in the morning.
Ali Yerlikaya, the minister, said on social media platform X that two police officers were slightly injured in the incident at 9:30 AM.
“Two terrorists, who arrived in a light commercial vehicle in front of the gate of the General Directorate of Security, carried out a bomb attack. One of the terrorists blew himself up,” said Ali Yerlikaya
Following the explosion and gunshots heard near the ministry building in Kizilay, the major city center in the capital, police forces increased security in the area.
The main Ataturk Boulevard was closed to traffic due to the explosion close to one of the gates of the Grand National Assembly which will open in the afternoon after a 3-month break.
Special operations police also were dispatched to the scene. The fire brigade and medical teams are also on the scene. The attack comes as Turkish authorities have been carrying out operations against ISIS members.
