ISLAMABAD: Karachi’s electricity consumers are likely to get a big relief in the summer as NEPRA has approved an additional supply of 150MW from the national grid to K-Electric.
K-Electric will get 150MW of electricity from three wind power plants, with Tenaga, Zephyr and Hydro China power plants supplying 50MW each.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has decided to supply 150MW of additional power to K-Electric, for which it approved a tripartite agreement between CPPA, NTDC and K-Electric.
The federal government was already supplying 650MW of electricity to K-Electric from the national grid, said NEPRA.
Earlier, Federal Energy Minister Omar Ayub Khan had expressed hope that K-Electric (KE), will establish its own 500 KV grid by 2021, which will improve the electricity system in the metropolis.
“The sole electricity provider in Karachi had not fulfilled its promised investment, however, the power system will be improved from next year,” he remarked. He further said that the power ministry has talked with almost 10 universities and they have agreed to acquire the solar-powered system.
“The rates of solar energy were Rs2 to Rs3 per unit, whereas, the current price per unit is now Rs6,” he informed.
The minister also criticized the past governments for their policies due to which Pakistan was generating energy by imported resources. “Prime Minister Imran Khan has given the vision to provide the best facilities to the nationals,” he added.
The federal minister also informed that the PTI-led federal government will announce a major change in the energy sector and it will be unveiled soon through the reforms process.
“Changes are already been witnessed in the energy sector by the new projects, whereas, all equipment for windmills will be manufactured in Pakistan now,” Omar Ayub added.
