RIYADH: A Saudi woman aged 106 has recovered from COVID-19 after contracting the potentially fatal disease.
The woman, a resident of the Saudi border city of Arar, had displayed symptoms of the new coronavirus while suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure, health spokesman in the Northern Border Province Fahd Al Anazi tol a local daily.
She was transferred to hospital where she later recovered without need to be placed on a ventilator, he added. The health official said the woman has recovered and left the hospital although it was unclear how the woman contracted the virus.
The provincial governor Prince Faisal Bin Khaled Bin Sultan called her and inquired after her health. A total of 407 coronavirus infections and 10 related deaths have been recorded in the province.
Saudi Arabia so far has reported a total of 186,436 virus cases including 1,599 deaths. The number of recovered patients has reached 127,118 so far.
In recent weeks, the Health Ministry has intensified efforts to raise public awareness about preventing the spread of the highly contagious disease, as the kingdom is gradually coming back to normal life.
The ministry has advised against shaking hands as a precaution to protect the elderly people as weak immunity makes them susceptible to infection.
Last week, Saudi authorities fully lifted a months-long curfew across the country and resumed all economic activities according to a phased plan for returning to normal life.
