YouTube has begun rolling out a new in-app messaging feature after completing its testing phase, aiming to allow users to communicate directly about videos within the platform.
With this new feature, a messaging icon has been added to the top-right corner of the YouTube app. It enables users to share videos, Shorts, and live streams, as well as engage in one-to-one chats.
However, the feature includes a safety and control system. To start a conversation with another user, an invitation link must first be sent.
This link remains valid for seven days and can be shared through WhatsApp or other third-party messaging apps. The purpose is to encourage communication mainly between friends and family rather than strangers.
According to YouTube, the feature was highly requested during its testing phase last year. It is worth noting that the company had previously offered a similar messaging service until 2019, when it was discontinued.
In the new system, users receiving an invite link can choose either “Allow messaging” or “Not now.” As a result, the feature is designed more for sharing and discussing videos rather than functioning as a full-scale social chat platform.
