LAHORE: Punjab police on Wednesday arrested Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leaders Dr Yasmin Rashid and Andleeb Abbas from Lahore.
The arrested leaders were on their way to Islamabad for Azadi long march when police took them into custody from the Timber Market area of the city.
According to details, Lahore police personnel have been mobilized to stop the participants of the Azadi Long March from reaching Islamabad.
Earlier in the day, police attacked Rashid’s car and broke the windscreen when she was heading towards Batti Chowk in Lahore.
At Lahore’s Batti Chowk, police resorted to tear gas shelling to disperse PTI workers when they removed barriers placed to block the routes.
Police encircled the car of the former health minister in an attempt to stop her from moving forward. According to the video circulating on social media, a PTI supporter came forward and verbally abused the police officials.
Meanwhile, Yasmin tried stopping the police from taking away her car keys. Dr Yasmin Rashid had an argument with policemen deployed to block the party workers from leaving the city.
Police personnel told the PTI leader that she cannot go but she did not pay any heed and continued to drive ahead. Police resorted to baton charge and broke the vehicle’s windscreen, but she managed to make her way.
PTI’s Lahore chapter had asked its workers to gather at the Batti Chowk today from where they were to depart for Islamabad. Several party workers were taken into custody during clashes.
