World Bank to provide $100 million for Sindh education project

ISLAMABAD: It has recently emerged that the World Bank intends to finance the Government of Sindh’s education program with a loan of $100 million to improve the quality of teaching methods and student allocation in early primary classrooms in 10 chosen districts of the province.

The “Sindh early learning enhancement through classroom transformation” project is likely to begin in March of this year, whereas the loan from the International Development Association (IDA), part of the World Bank Group, will be endorsed by the Bank in August of this year.

The plan involves improving 900 dilapidated schools in 10 chosen districts which requires the building of classrooms, toilets and facilities for drinking water.

A project-related World Bank report states that the districts and specific locations of the schools have not been determined at this point, but they will be chosen on the basis of a set of criteria, including the need for initiatives for low-learning outcomes, availability of minimum service delivery capability and gender and income-based equity factors.
