Since Tuesday morning, the hashtag Pragya Singh Thakur has been trending on social media. It looks like the BJP member waded into another controversy after her comments against the Babri Masjid sparked outrage in political circles earlier.
Controversial and brainless statements are not new for Pragya Singh Thakur and now almost everyone is curious that what the BJP member did.
Pragya Singh Thakur
Pragya Singh Thakur is a BJP Member of Parliament. She contested the 2019 Indian general election from Bhopal constituency, running against Digvijaya Singh of the Indian National Congress, the former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh.
She won her debut contest by a margin of 364,822 votes. According to political scientist Christophe Jaffrelot, she has become the “symbol” of the 2019 election, in which nebulous fringe elements of the Hindutva ideology became mainstream.
In 2021, Pragya Singh Thakur was made a part of the 21-member parliamentary consultative committee on defense, which is headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
What did she do?
Pragya Singh Thakur recently asked a gathering in Karnataka’s Shivamogga to keep weapons at home to cut ‘enemy’s head’.
“Keep weapons in your homes. At least keep the knives used to cut vegetables sharp. Don’t know what situation will arise when. Everyone has the right to self-protection. If someone infiltrates our house and attacks us, it is our right to respond to them. Just like how knives cut vegetables, it will also chop mouths and heads.”
While making an anti-Muslim remark, she said that Hindus have the right to respond to those who attack them and their dignity, as she spoke about the killing of Hindu activists.
She also called on the community to at least keep the knives in their homes sharp, as everyone has the right to protect themselves. “Love jihad, they (Muslim) have a tradition of jihad, if nothing they do love jihad. Even if they love they do jihad in that. We (Hindus) too love, love the god, a sanyasi loves his god,” Thakur said.
Previous controversies
Earlier, she called Nathuram Godse (Gandhi’s assassin) a patriot, for which she was criticized by opposition party members. and removed from the committee on defence as well as BJP parliamentary party meetings.
She is accused in the 2008 Malegaon bombings where 10 people were killed and 82 more were injured. She was arrested on terror charges after her bike was found to be used in the bomb blast.
She is currently under trial for multiple charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. In 2017 she was granted bail on health grounds following the dropping of some of the serious charges by the National Investigation Agency.
Outrage on social media
Many social media users are voicing their anger against the BJP member for her hatred towards Muslim living in India. Let’s have a look:
Every time there is a court hearing for Pragya Thakur she pretends to be sick. Actually it’s not a pretence- she has an incurable sickness of the mind.

It appears that Pragya Thakur can say whatever murderous nonsense she wants wherever there is an election and she will be applauded by the bigoted masses. Of course, the Prime Minister will “never forgive her” and she will have to live with that.

When journalists and activists charged under UAPA, under rare circumstances, get bail, they are almost always gagged from speaking to the media. However, Pragya Thakur, who has been out on bail since 2017, while charged under UAPA, has regularly incited violence with impunity. https://t.co/IQPxZjJsOI

This is a terror accused Member of Parliament asking people to have weapons at home to cut the enemies (a dog whistle for Minorities) like how vegetables are cut. I will be taking up legal action on #PragyaThakur ji. This is absolutely shameless & a violation of the Hon’ble SC pic.twitter.com/NSMQurvH6E

“Keep your knives sharpened at home”: Terror accused and BJP MP Pragya Thakur.
Both statements were made on the same day. Can happen only in India. pic.twitter.com/8gu7DWVVF1

A country where Umar Khalid rots in jail and Pragya Thakur is free to make speeches has no hope.
