Meta has appointed Indian entrepreneur Kunal Shah to lead WhatsApp, succeeding longtime chief Will Cathcart. The move places one of India’s most prominent startup founders at the helm of a service used by billions of people worldwide.

Shah is best known as the founder of fintech company CRED and co-founder of digital payments platform FreeCharge. Over the past decade, he has built a reputation as a leading entrepreneur, investor, and technology thought leader in India’s startup ecosystem.

The appointment marks a notable moment for both Meta and the global technology industry. WhatsApp, which serves users across more than 180 countries, has become a central platform for personal communication, business messaging, and digital commerce.

Meta’s decision to entrust its leadership to Shah signals a growing emphasis on innovation, payments, and business-focused services within the messaging ecosystem.

Before founding CRED in 2018, Shah co-founded FreeCharge, a mobile payments and recharge platform that was later acquired in one of India’s largest startup deals of its time. Through CRED, he expanded his influence in the fintech sector, building a platform that offers credit-card rewards, financial products, and digital payment solutions to millions of users.

While Meta has not detailed specific strategic changes under Shah’s leadership, industry observers expect continued investment in business messaging tools, AI-powered features, payment services, and deeper integration across Meta’s ecosystem.
