What is a ‘shoey’ celebration?

(Online)

The video of Australian cricketer Matthew Wade celebrating the team’s victory in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in a typical Australian celebration went viral, Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Akhtar could not stop calling the act disturbing.

It all started when Australian cricketers, who beat New Zealand in the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, celebrate their maiden title win by drinking beer shoes.

What happened?

In a video posted on ICC’s Instagram account, Australian player Matthew Wade removed his right shoe, poured a drink in it, and then chug it down with his Australian teammates.

Another player Marcus Stoinis, who along with Wade had starred in the chase for Australia in the semis against England, can be seen joining his teammate by pouring his drink in the same shoe and gulping it down. Its quite normal for AUstralian players from drinking from a shoe as they call it  a ‘shoey’ celebration.

What is a ‘shoey’ celebration?

The ‘shoey’ celebration is when someone drinks the celebratory drink or any beverage after pouring it in a shoe. The celebration, which is common in Australia, was first started by V8 Utes racer Ryal Harris, but it was made famous by Ricciardo at the German GP in 2016.

Ricciardo repeated the stunt on multiple occasions thereafter, even sharing it with the British Formula One legend Lewis Hamilton at the 2020 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

In 2019, Australian cricketer Andrew Tye had promised to do a ‘shoey’ celebration if his team Punjab Kings would have won the Indian Premier League that season. However, Tye had to drop the plan as Punjab Kings couldn’t even make it to the playoff stage.

Shoaib Akhtar’s reaction

The video was not well received by Pakistani former cricketer Shoaib Akhtar who reacted in quite a typical way to typical Aussie celebration as he found the celebrations ‘disgusting’. He shared the video on his Twitter account with the caption, saying: “A little disgusting way of celebrating no??
