The Village People, the iconic group behind the anthem “Y.M.C.A.,” which became a fixture at Donald Trump’s rallies, announced on Monday that they will perform at events surrounding next week’s inauguration of President-elect Trump.
In a statement posted on Facebook, lead singer Victor Willis confirmed that the group had accepted an invitation to participate in inaugural activities, including at least one event with the president-elect. Willis acknowledged that the decision might not sit well with everyone, but emphasized the group’s belief in music transcending politics.
“We know this won’t make some of you happy to hear, however, we believe that music is to be performed without regard to politics,” Willis said. “Our song ‘Y.M.C.A.’ is a global anthem that hopefully helps bring the country together after a tumultuous and divided campaign where our preferred candidate lost. Therefore, we believe it’s now time to bring the country together with music.”
Trump’s rallies have long featured the Village People’s hit from the 1970s, with the Republican candidate often dancing on stage to the upbeat track.
Alongside the Village People, country music star Carrie Underwood also announced that she will perform at the inauguration on January 20. The 41-year-old singer said in a statement, “I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event.”
Underwood, who will perform “America the Beautiful,” expressed her commitment to unity, stating, “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”
Historically, Trump has faced criticism from many entertainers who objected to him playing their music at his rallies, with some even threatening to boycott events like the Kennedy Center Honors, which he ultimately did not attend. Despite these tensions, the inclusion of the Village People and Underwood signals a continued blending of politics and entertainment at the upcoming inauguration.
