Sindh Health and Population Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho and US Ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome have initiated a collaborative effort to address tuberculosis (TB), a significant public health concern in Pakistan.
Official data reveals a disturbing 42.5 percent rise in TB cases over the past three years, with an estimated 47,000 fatalities expected in 2023. This stark reality undermines the government’s target of TB eradication by 2035, highlighting the inadequacy of resources for screening and treatment.
The newly launched program, Tuberculosis Local Organization Network (TB-LON), entails a $9 million investment spread across five years, sponsored by the US Agency for International Development (USAID). Its primary objective is to equip Pakistan with the necessary expertise and tools to effectively combat TB. Through direct engagement with affected communities and individuals, the program aims to tailor solutions to meet specific needs.
Ambassador Blome, commenting on TB-LON, expressed confidence in its ability to enhance TB treatment in Sindh and substantially reduce the disease’s impact. He underscored the robust partnership between the US and the Sindh government, emphasizing the transformative potential of the $9 million initiative in combating TB.
Dr. Pechuho acknowledged the ongoing support from the US government and reaffirmed the Sindh government’s dedication to improving healthcare services.
