A woman has grown a mullet longer than her height after going 33 years without a haircut to the back of her head. The hairstyle sets a new Guinness World Record.
Tami Manis from Tennessee hasn’t cut the back of her hair since 1990. In the 33 years since, it’s grown to 172.72 cm (5ft 8in).
Manis, 58, spoke on Thursday about her path to clinching what is arguably one of the most unusual marks maintained by Guinness world records. In an interview published by the organization known for curating a database of more than 40,000 world records, she revealed how the music video for the 1985 song Voices Carry by the rock band ‘Til Tuesday inspired her to begin growing her hair particularly long in the back.
“I’ve been blessed that my hair grows and now it’s the world’s longest mullet and I’m very happy with it,” she said.
Most people don’t realise how long the back is until she turns around, she said.
The US Mullet Championships is the largest competition of its kind in the world, drawing upwards of 1,000 applicants each year.
