US seizure of Iranian‑flagged tanker near Hormuz sends oil prices soaring

The United States Navy on Sunday intercepted and seized an Iranian‑flagged vessel near the Strait of Hormuz, in a move that has sharply escalated tensions between Washington and Tehran and sent global oil prices soaring.

According to reports gathered from multiple international media outlets, the guided‑missile destroyer USS Spruance intercepted the vessel — identified by some sources as the Touska — in the Gulf of Oman just outside the strategic chokepoint. U.S. officials said the ship ignored repeated warnings for nearly six hours before its engine room was disabled and U.S. Marines boarded to secure control.

BREAKING: The Pentagon has released footage of the US Navy OPENING FIRE on an Iranian-flagged cargo ship who IGNORED warnings to turn around over a six hour period

The tanker had already been placed under U.S. Treasury sanctions for its alleged role in transporting sanctioned Iranian crude. Washington is now treating the vessel as forfeitable property under sanctions‑enforcement law. Officials described the operation as part of a broader maritime blockade designed to restrict Iran’s oil exports and raise the cost of sanctions evasion.

American authorities argue the ship was attempting to bypass the blockade through “shadow‑fleet” tactics — including spoofed GPS signals, false flags and complex trans‑shipments — to deliver crude to buyers in China and Syria. The interception, they said, was intended to enforce sanctions, disrupt Iran’s revenue stream and demonstrate resolve amid wider regional tensions following the Iran–US–Israel flare‑up earlier this year.

Tehran, however, denounced the seizure as a violation of international law and of a fragile understanding reached in earlier diplomacy, reportedly mediated through third‑party capitals including Islamabad. Iranian officials warned of swift retaliation, with state media hinting at possible drone and missile strikes against U.S. or allied vessels in the Gulf.

As expected, the incident has heightened fears of a spiral in the region. The Strait of Hormuz handles nearly a quarter of the world’s seaborne oil, and any disruption there tends to reverberate across global markets. Crude futures jumped sharply within hours of the seizure, underscoring the vulnerability of energy supplies to geopolitical shocks.
