The United States military has confirmed that two American service members were killed and four others were medically evacuated after an Iranian missile and drone attack targeted US forces in Jordan.
According to a statement by the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees American military operations across the Middle East, one service member remains missing following the attack that took place on Friday.
“On July 17, two US service members in Jordan were killed in action as US Central Command (CENTCOM) and partner forces defended against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks. Additionally, one service member is currently missing in action,” CENTCOM said.
The military added that four injured service members were transported to hospitals in Jordan for medical treatment and have since been discharged. Other personnel who sustained minor injuries were treated and have already returned to duty.
With the latest fatalities, the number of US military personnel killed in the ongoing conflict has risen to 16. The increase comes after a US Navy pilot, who had been missing earlier this month, was officially declared dead, marking the second rise in the American death toll this week.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed it destroyed at least two US fighter aircraft at Jordan’s Al-Azraq Air Base during strikes carried out early Saturday. The claim was reported by Iranian state media, and there has been no independent confirmation from US officials.
