A recent United Nations report has revealed alarming statistics about violence against women, with the home being declared the most dangerous place for them. According to the report, 85,000 women were intentionally killed by men in 2023 alone, and of these, 60 percent were murdered by their partners or family members.
The findings highlight that, on average, 140 women and girls are killed by a spouse or a family member every day across the globe.
The deputy executive director of UN Women emphasized that these figures reflect the grim reality that women face life-threatening violence in places where they should feel safest—in their own homes.
The report also acknowledged that the available data only offers a partial view of the situation, as not all femicides are accurately recorded. “Not all deaths are accurately recorded as feminicide, and there are many areas where we don’t have access to information,” said the deputy executive director of UN Women.
This report, based on data from 107 countries, was jointly published by UN Women and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to mark the 25th International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. It serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing violence women face globally, underscoring the urgent need for action to protect women’s rights and safety in all areas of life.
