Unidentified armed men killed two tribal elders in the Zarmilan area of Toi Khulla tehsil in Lower South Waziristan on Sunday, police said.
The deceased were identified as Haji Gul and Malik Badshah, both members of the Suleman Khel tribe. The attackers fled the area following the shooting.
District Police Officer Shah Hassan said the victims were travelling from Gul Kach towards Zarmilan when gunmen opened fire on their vehicle at Darozanda. The two men sustained multiple bullet wounds and died at the scene.
Police registered a preliminary report at Toi Khulla police station and launched an investigation, the DPO said, adding that efforts were underway to identify and arrest the assailants.
Lower South Waziristan and other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have continued to face security challenges, including targeted killings, bomb blasts, kidnappings, extortion and attacks on police and security personnel.
Tribal elders have increasingly been targeted. In May, Ahmadzai Wazir tribal chief Malik Tariq Wazir was among three people killed in an IED blast in Wana.
