KARACHI: Two policemen along with a high-ranking officer have been arrested on charges of abducting a businessman in a police van.
The prime suspect DSP Rashid Iqbal had been arrested yesterday in the businessman’s abduction case. He was serving as DSP Investigation Saeedabad in District Keamari South Zone.
The Anti Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) of Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) has arrested two more suspects in the case and seized official weapons and mobile phones from them. Police said the DSP had taken Rs1.5 million ransom from the builder’s family as well.
During the investigation, it had emerged that the police van of DSP Rashid Iqbal had been used for kidnapping a builder from Gulistan-e-Jauhar and kept in confinement at his office.
Earlier, police claimed the DSP’s son had used the police van in the kidnapping of the businessman. He is at large since the kidnapping incident and has not been apprehended.
The police officer had been suspended with immediate effect by Additional Inspector General (AIG) Karachi Ghulam Nabi Memon and an inquiry will be held into his conduct.
The Karachi police chief had constituted a three-member committee under the supervision of deputy inspector general police (DIG) CIA Karachi Arif Hanif. The other members of the committee include Captain (Retd) Asim Khan, DIGP West Zone, and Abdullah Ahmed, senior superintendent police (SSP) AVCC/CIA Karachi.
On December 9, a builder identified as Shoaib had lodged a First Investigation Report (FIR) against his abduction by a group of policemen in a police van, alleging that he was forcefully taken away from a construction site in Gulistan-e-Jauhar.
