Athar Viqar Azim, former director of current affairs at Pakistan Television (PTV) and general manager of its Karachi Centre, passed away on Sunday.
A key figure in establishing current affairs programming at PTV, Athar covered numerous historic events through live telecasts for the state broadcaster. He was also highly skilled in sports production and played a pivotal role in the live coverage of major sporting events.
He is survived by his son and will be laid to rest on Tuesday (tomorrow). Athar was married to Shireen Azim, a renowned PTV drama producer behind iconic plays like Uncle Urfi and Kiran Kahani. Sadly, she passed away when their son was only six years old.
Following his tenure at PTV, Athar joined Hum TV Network as part of its founding team.
The President of the Arts Council of Pakistan, Muhammad Ahmad Shah, expressed profound sorrow over Athar’s passing, praising his significant contributions to sports journalism in Pakistan. Shah also remembered Athar’s role as a former vice president of the Arts Council.
