President Donald Trump on Friday said he will hit Apple with a tariff “of at least 25%” for iPhones that are produced outside the United States.
Taking to his social media platform Truth Social, the US president said ““I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhone’s that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else. If that is not the case, a Tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the U.S.”
The post followed prior warnings of potential import tariffs targeting Apple due to its continued manufacturing operations in Asia.
Apple now finds itself alongside major U.S. corporations such as Amazon and Walmart under scrutiny from the White House, as these companies grapple with the economic uncertainty and inflationary pressures resulting from recent tariff policies.
In response to former President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Chinese imports, Apple CEO Tim Cook stated earlier this month that the majority of iPhones sold in the U.S. this fiscal quarter would be manufactured in India, while iPads and other devices would be sourced from Vietnam.
Following the introduction of tariffs in April, financial analysts projected that the cost of a $1,200 iPhone could surge to between $1,500 and $3,500 if production were shifted entirely to the United States.
