Traffic flow was disrupted at Fawara Chowk, Karachi, after police baton-charged Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protesters during a demonstration held over Kashmir Black Day. Several PTI workers were detained as police moved to disperse the protesters.
According to details, PTI Sindh held a protest at Fountain Chowk on August 5 in connection with the Kashmir issue. Police used force to disperse the protesters and arrested several PTI workers, including party leader Masroor Sial.
PTI Sindh President Haleem Adil Sheikh strongly condemned the arrest of PTI Sindh General Secretary Dr Masroor Sial and other workers.
He said the arrests during a peaceful protest on Kashmir Black Day were unacceptable and alleged that Sindh Police had violated citizens’ constitutional right to protest.
Sheikh claimed that the move was against democratic values and accused the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)-led Sindh government of suppressing political workers.
He said the arrests of peaceful protesters were an example of “police brutality and political victimisation,” adding that preventing citizens from exercising their right to expression and peaceful assembly was a violation of the Constitution and law.
The PTI leader demanded the immediate release of all detained party leaders and workers, saying the role of police was to protect citizens rather than be used for political purposes.
He urged the Sindh government to respect democratic traditions instead of using coercive measures, saying any crackdown against peaceful PTI workers was unacceptable.
He added that peaceful protests were being held across Sindh for the release of PTI founder Imran Khan.
